Orange Cross Ambulance offers Critical Care Transportation

by Gerry Isbell, Executive Director, Orange Cross Ambulance

I am pleased to announce that Orange Cross Ambulance Paramedics Mike Jerving, Nick Walesh and Gary Becker have successfully completed an intense 8-week course in Critical Care Transport (CCT) at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

This enhanced training was presented by Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists, providing their experience and hands-on training, with equipment and medications that our Paramedics do not typically come in contact with including such topics as: Diagnostic and Vascular access, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary and Endocrine, Hematology, Immunology, Neurology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Shock, Sepsis, Trauma, Burns and special population patients.

Orange Cross Paramedics serve both Saint Nicholas Hospital and Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. We currently transport the vast majority of the patients that require a higher level of care than is available in the Sheboygan County area, including but not limited to: Heart Attacks, High-Risk OB patients, Pediatric and Neo-Natal patients and Trauma patients. This specialized training enables Orange Cross Paramedics to better respond and treat any complications that may arise during a transfer of a critically injured or ill patient.

In addition to the CCT training that our Paramedics received, they must also maintain certifications in PHTLS (Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support), NALS (Neo-Natal Advanced Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), or PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals). CCT certification requires additional hours every two years in Critical Care.

Dr. Suzanne Martens, Orange Cross’ Medical Director, will be actively involved with reviewing all Critical Care Transfers with the appropriate facilities. “I look forward to working with Orange Cross in providing CCT as another service to the community as well as working closely with local nurses and physicians in providing further Critical Care in Sheboygan County,” said Martens.

“The Critical Care Transport Program brings Orange Cross paramedics and local health care providers together in an effort to provide transitional care between prehospital and hospital care. The result is a critical care paramedic crew that has an understanding of both aspects of patient care, and uses this understanding and training to provide the highest level of care to patients during transport,” Gerry Isbell, Executive Director.
